"VISIONS OF WARRIORS" TO SCREEN ONLINE FOR THE AZUSA CITY LIBRARY

In observance of Memorial Day, “Visions of Warriors” will be screening online for the Azusa City Library from Monday, 5/25/2020 to Monday, 6/8/2020. There will be a Q&A with director Ming Lai, moderated by Jennifer Agnew of the library, on Tuesday, 6/9/2020 at 1:00 p.m. The Q&A will be recorded and available afterward. To help veterans obtain their benefits, the library has a Veterans Resource Center. It’s also involved with the Veterans History Project, whose mission is to “collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.” The screening and Q&A are a part of "Community Conversations with Veterans,” a partnership between California Center for the Book and Veterans Connect @ the Library. The initiative offers California libraries the opportunity to connect more closely with veterans and their families, while also helping veterans and their families connect to the community and resources. California Center for the Book is a program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN ONLINE FOR THE CITY OF COMMERCE PUBLIC LIBRARY

“Visions of Warriors” will be screening online for the City of Commerce Public Library from Monday, 5/18/2020 to Monday, 6/1/2020. A Q&A with director Ming Lai, James Zenner of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, and Dr. Christina Robinson, the Military Sexual Trauma Coordinator for the Greater Los Angeles VA Healthcare System, will be held on Thursday, 6/4/2020, at 6:00 p.m. The Q&A will be recorded and available after the event. This special event is a part of the California Center for the Book’s Community Conversations with Veterans initiative. Originally, this screening and Q&A was supposed to be a live event. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the California Center for the Book and the City of Commerce Public Library along with other participating libraries have quickly adapted to the challenging situation and moved this program online. Community Conversations with Veterans is a partnership between California Center for the Book and Veterans Connect @ the Library. The initiative offers California libraries the opportunity to connect more closely with veterans and their families, while also helping veterans and their families connect to the community and resources. California Center for the Book is a program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. We’re based in Los Angeles near the City of Commerce so we’re honored to be able to serve this dynamic city. COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS WITH VETERANS AND “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” GO ONLINE

We’ve had the honor of working with the respected California Center for the Book since last year. The organization is a program of the California Library Association, supported in whole or in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. We’re a part of their Community Conversations with Veterans program, which is a partnership between them and Veterans Connect @ the Library that offers California libraries the opportunity to connect more closely with veterans and their families while also helping veterans and their families connect to the community and resources. Through this program, we’ve had the opportunity to screen “Visions of Warriors” at many California libraries and participate in Q&A’s. It’s been wonderful sharing our film, connecting with our audience, and most of all trying to assist veterans. This year, we had many more events scheduled. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, all of them were postponed until further notice. To adapt to these challenging times and continue to help veterans, we’ve been working with the California Center for the Book and the participating libraries to go online with program. Starting with the San Jose Public Library/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library and San Jose State University, we’ll be having our first virtual screening from Monday, 4/20/2020 to Monday, 5/4/2020 and Q&A on Thursday, 4/23/2020 (the recorded event will be available starting on Monday, 4/27/2020). We’re so proud of this organization and the libraries in quickly responding to meet the needs of the public, in particular veterans who are at even greater risk with this pandemic. We deeply appreciate the opportunity to work with all of them.

“VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN FOR THE SAN JOSE PUBLIC LIBRARY/DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. LIBRARY AND SAN JOSE STATE UNIVERSITY

Originally, the California Center for the Book, San Jose Public Library/Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, and San Jose State University (SJSU) were planning to host a live screening of “Visions of Warriors” and Q&A with filmmaker Ming Lai and veteran Mark Pinto. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this live event will be postponed. However, to comply with the state’s “stay at home” order and practice “social distancing,” they will be holding a virtual screening instead, offered free to library patrons and university students and faculty from Monday, 4/20/2020 to Monday, 5/4/2020. On Thursday, 4/23/2020, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., there will be a Q&A with Ming and Mark, moderated by Jemerson Diaz, a U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) veteran, former SJSU Communications Department adjunct faculty member, SJSU Mental Health Ambassador, Veterans Embracing Transition (VET) Connect peer leader, Warriors at Home teaching assistant, and National Alliance on Mental Illness leader. Mark is a USMC veteran, SJSU alumnus, VET Connect alumnus, and artist. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN AT THE ARCADIA PUBLIC LIBRARY [POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE]

We’re pleased to announce that “Visions of Warriors” feature documentary will be screening at the Arcadia Public Library on Monday, 4/20/2020, from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Arcadia is part of the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles. Based in this diverse and thriving region, we’re proud to call it our home. It’s an honor to be able to share our film with its residents, in particular veterans and their families. This screening is made possible by “Community Conversations with Veterans,” a partnership between the California libraries and the respected California Center for the Book. The Arcadia Public Library’s community partner for the screening is the Gilb Museum of Arcadia Heritage, which will be unveiling a new Arcadia Veterans Kiosk. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN AT THE KERN COUNTY LIBRARY / BEALE MEMORIAL LIBRARY [POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE]

We’re excited to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Kern County Library/Beale Memorial Library on Tuesday, 4/7/2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. as part of California Center for the Book and the California libraries’ “ Community Conversations with Veterans” program. The original Beale Memorial Library with its mission style architecture was opened in 1900. Because of an earthquake in 1957, it moved to a new location on Truxtun Avenue. In 1988, a new main library building at this location was opened and has served the community ever since. The Kern County Library system offers Veterans Resource Centers at multiple locations. Its goal is to offer its customers a positive library experience and outstanding service. “VISIONS OF WARRIORS” TO SCREEN AT THE CORONADO PUBLIC LIBRARY [POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE]

We’re thrilled to announce that “Visions of Warriors” will be screening at the Coronado Public Library on Saturday, 3/21/2020, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. as part of the California Center for the Book and California libraries’ Community Conversations with Veterans program. Coronado and surrounding San Diego are home to many veterans and active military. Founded in 1890, the library on picturesque Coronado island has a rich history. John D. Spreckels, the owner of the iconic Hotel del Coronado, built the library with its classic revival architecture and gave it to the city of Coronado and its people. According to its website, the mission of the library is to “promote reading, life-long learning, and the pursuit of knowledge.” Its veterans resources include “Veterans Connect @ the Library,” which connects veterans and their families to benefits and services for which they are eligible.
